| The first American editions of Jane Austen's "Emma" (1816), and of the remaining five novels (1832-3), have received littel critical attention. This article summarizes the publication history of all six titles and gives details of the bowdlerization of Jane Austen's text in five of these, before conecentrating on the 1816 and 1833 Philadelphia editions of "Emma", whose text is compared at length with that of the english original, with listings of different categories of variants (in particular spelling variations which may reflect early attempts to codify American linguistic usage) | |
