Beschreibung:
In this paper, I discuss Margaret Atwood's novels with regard to the protagonists' perception of their female body. I argue that a woman's corporeality is being largely determined by the society she lives in and by the political function of the female body. The analysis of psychological mechanisms of dissociation between body and self leads to the thesis that dissociation may represent a specifically female mechanism of coping with situations which seem unbearable for the individual subject. In Atwood's novels the protagonists suffer from various states of dissociation and fragmentation; they both undergo a process of healing and finally return to a - more or less - unified perception of themselves.
